Video Vignettes
In order to hear from people who can share their experience of poverty and suggest solutions,
we have produced a series of video vignettes for the Vote Out Poverty event.
We retained Deveaux-Babin Productions to lead this project -- Suzanne Babin, Bert Deveaux and Leona Gilbert have created and produced award-winning documentaries about social issues as well as reality series for CBC, TV Ontario, Life Network and other broadcasters in Canada, the United States and around the world. They were assisted by a team of volunteers, many of them from Ryerson’s Film and Television program.
Our producers looked for people with compelling stories to tell:
(Click on their name to hear their story)
1.
Mark - A thirty-year-old man with a disability, living in Parkdale.
2.
Satia - A woman of Tamil descent who is one of the working poor.
3.
Lilliana - A Chilean single mother who lives in Jane-Finch and works in the local community centre
for minimum wage.
4.
Tammy - An Aboriginal women who can’t manage on minimum wage.
5.
Mike - A white man who lives in Regent Park, suffers cancer, and has established a garden
for the tenants.
We hope these authentic stories will be of enduring value -- a classroom resource for teachers, and the basis of a documentary calling for a poverty reduction plan, which we hope to have broadcast in the coming year. Copies of the video with all five vignettes are available in DVD format free of charge.
